We went (w Paul Davignon) bareboot to the jct (ice climbers had broken the trail to the first cliff). Then switch to snowshoes as the trail climb. Once on the steep part, snowshoes (MSR lightning ascent) were not enough, just slidding down in the steepnest of the fresh snow. It was more efficient to go postholing calves deep with light traction. At some part, real crampons would have been more efficient, but it was only some minor sections. Between the 2 peaks snowshoeing was necessary. On top of Osceola I saw the large pileated woodpeaker, nice gift from nature. On my way back the wind picked up and stated filling my footprints on the crest. Going down was a breeze as we slide the trail with plactic butt carpet. Fantastic day and a good Jane Fonda workout! |
