Comments: Tuckerman Ravine trail up to the Lion's Head winter route is a well-packed highway. Wore microspikes up it to avoid minor slippage but easily could have barebooted. The "Hillary Step" at the beginning of Lions Head had some bare rock that made it a little tricky in crampons but other than that it was smooth sailing up to the ridge with almost no exposed ice. Above the trees there were some bare spots on the trail, traces of ice here and there and very few drifts - mostly semi-packed snow.
Went with crampons and an axe but it would have been possible to climb with microspikes (saw several people doing it, but I prefer the extra traction especially coming down).
Weather was clear in the morning but by about noon we were well into the clouds with visibility dropping to a few hundred feet by the time we hit the summit at 1:15. Winds were around 50-60 on the summit, with an air temperature somewhere in the mid-teens, so it was a downright balmy day up there.
Kept the crampons on all the way down, although they were completely unnecessary on the Tuckerman Ravine trail.
