Started a bit later than planned. I put MSR snowshoes on immediately - mainly for the "lift" feature but also good traction. We were on Wildcat D in 1-1/2 hours and on A within 3-1/4 hours of our start at the base. Wildcat Ridge Trail from D to A was like a fairly narrow sidewalk. I used snowshoes the entire day but my companions did not have good snowshoes so they switched to crampons - microspikes would have worked for traction. We would have made better time but for the equipment changes and the constantly outstanding views of Mount Washington, Tuckerman Ravine, and Huntington Ravine - kept stopping to take in the views. Then gorgeous view of Carter Notch at Wildcat A. But the wind was really whipping through the ridge line at times and ski slope (being wide open) was very cold up and down with sometimes brutal wind. But we had a great day. Started at 8:45 and back at 3:00. Makes for Winter Peak #39 for me. |
