Hiking Trail Conditions Report
Peaks
Peaks North Twin Mountain, South Twin Mountain, NH
Trails
Trails: Herd path, North Twin Trail, North Twin Spur
Date of Hike
Date of Hike: Friday, February 28, 2014
Parking/Access Road Notes
Parking/Access Road Notes: Haystack Road closed. End of Little River road was plowed enough to handle about 6 cars without blocking the numerous "off limits" areas like the driveway and snow mobile trail. Gate on bridge to snow mobile trails was open when I left but closed when I returned, a demoralizing hand and knee duck under so close to the car.
Surface Conditions
Surface Conditions: Snow - Packed Powder/Loose Granular, Ice - Breakable Crust, Snow/Ice - Frozen Granular, Snow - Drifts, Snow/Ice - Postholes
Recommended Equipment
Recommended Equipment: Snowshoes, Light Traction
Water Crossing Notes
Water Crossing Notes: 3rd river crossing had a few small holes right at bank but otherwise very solidly bridged. Most small drainages were bridged but a few were open to the water but easily crossed.
Trail Maintenance Notes
Trail Maintenance Notes: Yellow blazes on North Twin Trail few and far between and faded. One actual duck-under(easy)roughly half way up trail and several leaners that weren't an issue yet. North Twin Spur had was well blazed with blue marks in the col for easy navigation in the areas that drift. No blow downs.
Dog-Related Notes
Dog-Related Notes: Fine for dogs. Beautiful Bermese Mountain Dog out with a group of 6 today and he was loving it.
Bugs
Bugs:
Lost and Found
Lost and Found: none

Comments
Comments: Very firm and well established track just about the entire way up to where trail bends left and begins climbing more steadily (about 3700'). From there it was a little less consolidated but still firm. Some drifting (no more than 12") about 1/4 mile before and 1/2 mile after summit and quite a few postholes in these areas. After col the trail was more loose powder on top of the track. Actual South Twin summit area was a glaze of weak ice on the rocks with very firm crusty snow. Easy to maneuver. Thanks to a group of 6 and two solo hikers the way back was much more packed down. Even some ski tracks from Firewarden junction back to lot. I wore snow shoes car to car but everyone else I passed wore spikes (and most were carrying snow shoes). I preferred the snow shoes from about the point where the trail turns left and climbs more steeply (approx. 3700'), over the summits and back to that point. You could have done the trails however you wanted today but you had to watch for post holes concealed with fresh powder in the upper sections. Rolled my ankles many times but the snow shoe frames kept me from dropping in. Good time too hit these trails right now.
