It was a nice day, with a summit temperature around 20°, but very windy above the treeline. I originally planned to do the Franconia Ridge loop, but I got a late start and couldn't seem to get the lead out of my feet early in the day, so due to time concerns I summited Lafayette and then doubled back.
The snow at lower altitudes was packed just loosely enough to make for a bit of a trudge, without making it worthwhile to put on snowshoes. At higher altitudes it was firm and ice-encrusted, making for easy walking with micros. I recommend snowshoes as a precaution, but I didn't use them. My ice axe was occasionally handy for balance but far from a necessity. |
