Hiking Trail Conditions Report
Peaks
Peaks North Tripyramid, Middle Tripyramid, NH
Trails
Trails: Pine Bend Brook Trail, Mt. Tripyramid Trail
Date of Hike
Date of Hike: Sunday, February 9, 2014
Parking/Access Road Notes
Parking/Access Road Notes: Both North and South side of road had enough spaced plowed to get a reasonable sized car outside the white line. Larger vehicles may stick out onto road a bit. First car there around 7AM this morning. About 5-6 cars when I left around 3PM. (FYI Hancock lot and Greeley Pond lot were fully plowed out and in good shape. Lot of cars with room to spare)
Surface Conditions
Surface Conditions: Snow - Packed Powder/Loose Granular, Snow/Ice - Frozen Granular, Mud - Minor/Avoidable
Recommended Equipment
Recommended Equipment: Snowshoes, Light Traction, Traction
Water Crossing Notes
Water Crossing Notes: The seven main river crossings were all easy. About half bridged, the rest open but with low water and plenty of rocks/logs to step on. The minor brooks were mostly bridged with a few small muddy spots.
Trail Maintenance Notes
Trail Maintenance Notes: Both trails well blazed, although many of the yellow blazes were older or faded. Both trails had numerous "leaners" that are fairly easy duck unders (although several on your knees). As previous reports pointed out these are going to become very difficult as snow gets deeper or if the trees sag further. There were a few other minor stepovers.
Dog-Related Notes
Dog-Related Notes: Fine for dogs. Saw a few old paw prints but no dogs today.
Bugs
Bugs:
Lost and Found
Lost and Found: none

Comments
Comments: Weather was far better than forecast (bright blue skies versus mostly cloudy forecast and no wind anywhere on hike). The trails are very well packed and tracked and pretty much any form of traction would fit the bill (I did snowshoes car to car and the other 7 people I saw all had snow shoes but there were several tracks from people with crampons/mini-crampons). There were only two "tricky" spots. First was the steep part of Pine Bend that climbs river valley and angles out of ravine on switchbacks to Scaur Ridge. It was less packed and more powdery here which was awkward in spots descending (but a few well timed butt slides took the difficulty away). The other spot was the last 0.3-0.4 miles approaching N Tripyramid. Some of the steeper spots were scratched off, revealing some firm ice. Many alternate tracks to avoid but again descending in a few places was awkward. Was a stray stump or two lurking just below some powder here and there so worth keeping eyes peeled on the way down. Other than that trail was in about as good a shape as it gets. Quick and easy. One other note: didn't look like anyone had been on Sabbaday Falls trail in quite some time. No tracks and no depression in snow to suggest it had ever been packed out.
