We had the honor of being first up on this Twins out and back this morning. There wasn't as much new snow as expected, perhaps only about 4 inches, some deeper drifted areas up high. Cold start, a bit below zero, and right around zero on the ridge. Snowshoes excellent/needed for the steeps up N. Twin and ridge, but there was a good amount of traffic today and one could microspike the other sections and The winds forecast was wrong again, NOAA was predicting 30-35, the highest gust we measured was 8 mph. That said, we wore neoprene facemasks with the low ambient temperature. Plenty of frozen eyelashes, beardsicles, and frost inside our shells today.
A note on the herd path from the parking area to the north twin trailhead- cross the snowmobile trail bridge visible from the parking area and then immediately turn left to follow the west bank of the river. Its obvious once you get on it, but we missed it this morning since it wasn't broken.
Great day out with the trailbreaking machine Greg YEAH! and Summerset.
No jokes today. Winter hiking is serious business. |
