Well packed trails. Barebooting was possible but the trail was still soft and after only 100 feet I put on the snowshoes and kept them on until back at the road. Most, and I must have met about thirty happy hikers today, wore snwoshoes, but a few wore microspikes or crampons. The barebooters must have wasted a lot of effort on the soft trail bed. The trail up South Hancock was well worn and had some ice. Only a couple have been on the trail between the two peaks and I found many places completely covered by drifting snow. But this will no longer be the case after today. Coming down from the North peak was great as I was the first down and did not have to butt slide. |
