Attempted the Winter trail. The first very difficult pitch transitions from (not enough) ice to rock at its steepest point. Very difficult with crampons on this rock. An alternative is a vertical ice wall to the right, but that is probably best attempted with 2 axes. Descent would be challenging either way. From http://www.mountwashingtonavalanchecenter.org/avalanche-safety/trails/lion-head-trail/, we have "This trail is not built for traffic without adequate snow cover", which I think it's fair to say is the current condition on the worst part. Did the Summer trail instead and strongly recommend against this. It was broken, but the snow field before the 2 paths meet up is too loaded for comfort.
Minimal cover above treeline with lots of exposed rock. Micros are better there. Beautiful day, clear blue skies, 15F on top with minimal wind. We were on the only 2 to summit. Not nearly enough snow or ice on the mountain for this time of year. |
