Great day out-NO breeze at all on the ridge. Snowshoed from the car to part way down the Imp trail where I changed to Hillsound trail crampons. The 19mbt and Carter Dome trail could easily be barebooted to Zeta Pass. Trail was a mixed bag of packed, icy snow, loose snow in the trenches, sections of ice, drifts. The Carter Dome trail from Zeta Pass was blown in and drifted over in places and going to South and Middle Carter found much of the same thing without the drifts. Looks like no activity on most of this over the past week with the exception of critters. It was easy going in shoes until Imp trail which is a mess as usual. Long sections of uncovered ice flow mixed with sections of concealed ice. Bony in many spots and basically a pain in the butt. Switched to Hillsounds here and they worked well enough but you can't relax on it. Finished January Grid.. |
