It was cold. Only came across 6 hikers: 3 with microspikes/crampons, 3 with snowshoes. I wore crampons and Thank God I did! Going up that section of Avalon Trail [between A-Z and Mt. Avalon] was very icy [under the 2-3" of new snow].
I wouldn't recommend going down it. If you really want to do Avalon Trail, I would suggest going up the trail and returning by way of Willey Range Trail and onto A-Z Trail. Not only is it safer, but actually quite the effortless descent [not to mention what a pleasure that part of Willey Range is to stride]. Let's put it this way: A-Z Trail should be called E-Z Trail. Sweet. |
