no problem either; was only car in lot all morning |
|
| Surface Conditions: |
Ice - Black, Snow - Trace/Minimal Depth, Snow - Packed Powder/Loose Granular, Ice - Breakable Crust, Snow/Ice - Frozen Granular, Snow - Drifts |
|
| Recommended Equipment: |
Snowshoes, Light Traction |
|
| Water Crossing Notes: |
no problem, though I somehow broke through some ice on my return; had my foot quickly up in the air and never submerged it; but as long as you step on rocks, you are fine (but apparently I missed a rock); rocks well hidden under ice and snow |
|
| Trail Maintenance Notes: |
fine trail, no obstacles at all |
|
| Dog-Related Notes: |
the snowfall from the day before (Cannon Mountain reported 3-5in snowfall) covered all the ice; should not be a problem for dogs, but I did not see any on the trail |

| Comments: |
was only person on trail; just past Bald Peak spur trail I put on snowshoes as the new snow depth became significant; before that had used microspikes, though except for a few sections one could have easily bare booted trail; was glad for traction of snowshoes thereafter; lots of ice hidden beneath snow; less snow on the ridge trail; changed back to microspikes; bumped into 3 people who had come up from the hut and went to N Kinsman; I was only one on South Kinsman; on way down it really started to snow that eventually I could not see my steps from my ascend anymore; gorgeous morning to be out and about; no views in the distance, but beautiful on trail itself and wind was not too bad; boot skied and butt sled on the descend--made the hidden ice easy to navigate and was fun; no need for snowshoes on the descend |
