Comments
Comments: Lots of flow ice on the Ammo. I started in light traction, switched to crampons halfway up, and had my axe out before the hut. Some drifting near the hut. Going up Monroe, I hit a ‘wall’ of snow/ice which I climbed on the way up but cut around on the decent. Goggles and full skin cover we necessary at this point as there was a significant wind chill—however, that would soon cease to be an issue. Going up Washington was hard as there was knee deep snow, but too many ice patches to go to shoes. The Carains were very easy to identify and follow. There were a bunch of people at the top, but they all came from the east. The summit was nearly windless. The Jewell side was very icy and had much less snow (crampons a must). Sleeveless said it all in her report on Jeff. Those holes between rocks were very dangerous. I used micros for Jeff, as well as to descend the Jewell. The Jewell is easy walking, which was most welcome at the end of the day.
