Surface Conditions

Recommended Equipment
Recommended Equipment: Snowshoes, Light Traction
Water Crossing Notes
Water Crossing Notes: A few open minor stepover drainages on way up to Pierce.
Trail Maintenance Notes
Trail Maintenance Notes: One yellow birch blowdown that is too large to cu with a hiker's saw on the way up to Pierce. People are going around it.
Dog-Related Notes
Dog-Related Notes: Pretty fun day for Pepper. There are a few spots of open water going up that could get the paws wet, but they are easy to jump. There was some drifting of snow between Pierce & Eisenhower, sometimes with deep footprints in it, which combined with the new snow could produce some snowballing on the legs. It was minor on Pepper today.

Comments
Comments: Barebootable hike although I used microspikes since they were on; they provided little if any advantage. On the ridge I would have preferred to have had my MSR Evo Ascents on for their traction. There was an inch or two of new snow overnight and today. The trail up the ridge is hard packed. On the ridge there has been drifting, and the snow is mostly un packed, but never deep enough to significantly impact the work required, and not consolidated enough to posthole. We truncated a planned hike due to the forecast and start conditions, but we needn't have done so. The mountain weather site had some light snow in the am and strong winds and clearing/cooling in the pm. Wrong again. We drove up and hiked in mostly light snow, with light winds, without clearing and mid20s temps, making for very easy hiking without any views. We didn't see all that many hikers other than one large group, and (I think) none between the peaks. Pepper had fun hiking with Georg and Marty. He seemed a bit surprised when they fed the birds treats he would have happily eaten, but he managed to get some good stuff out of Georg as he always does.
