Comments
Comments: Very little snow on the ground at the trail head. Started off with microspikes but took them off as it was too warm and they were collecting snowballs. After a couple of miles the trail got steeper and lots of white ice so I put them on again and they worked fine. The ice was very soft with a covering of sticky snow. I decided to put on crampons just before the junction with the Kinsman Ridge trail and they were fine all the way over to South Kinsman and back. Met Brian who had come up from the Basin with only microspikes and he said he had no problem. Also met LadyGray who was doing fine with her Hillsounds. Kept the crampons on until the first bridge and then put microspikes back on. There is certainly plenty of ice on both trails but with about 1 inch of sticky snow on top traction was better than I thought it would be. Beautiful day and the sun came out. Snowshoes got a ride, definitely not needed.
