Kind of too nice a day for Waumbek but we stuck with the plan today. Greeted by a fresh blanket of snow down below that was sticking to everything..including the ice! Footing was very good ..Valerie kept her spikes on, I barebooted at times as the 1-2 inches of snow provided great traction. Once up by the spring tehere were some large slabs of ice and the traction proved helpful. Gorgeous view from Starr King. Quite a bit colder along the ridge and the snow depths varied from 2-6 inches. Probably could have used snowshoes in a couple of places here but we saw 10 people today after us and all were in light traction. The trail is well packed out. We continued along the ridge past the summit viewpoint for 2/10ths following a moose to the next bump along the ridge which provided some different angle views. Things got a bit slushier on the way down and there were some slick spots. When this freezes up it could be pretty icy but today, which felt like an april day, was superb. Nice to un into Sarah and Hannah along the way. Thanks Valerie for a good day out. |
