Comments
Comments: Quite a variety of trail conditions today! Everything from bare ground down low - didn't even look like January - to packed snow near the top. Quite a lot of snow covered ice, ice flows and bulges from about the 2 mile mark on the trail proper (3 miles from winter parking) to about .5 miles from the junction with the Garfield Ridge Trail where the snow depth increases and is packed. Mix of packed snow and ice on the short steep section from the junction to the summit. With the warmer temps in the afternoon, there was some melting and some running water under the ice in places. No need for snowshoes. Microspikes or similar and Hillsound Trail Pros did the job. More traction helped on descent. Weather was nice - sunshine, mild temps, although a bit windy on the top! Trip report will be on the blog in a few days. Thanks to Joanie and Suzanne from Maine for letting me hike with them for the day and for such an enjoyable time, and thanks to Joe for helping me rescue my hat from the spruce at the summit!
