Date of Hike
Date of Hike: Saturday, January 4, 2014
Parking/Access Road Notes
Parking/Access Road Notes: We parked on the road which is plowed wider in that area.
Surface Conditions
Surface Conditions: Snow - Unpacked Powder
Recommended Equipment
Recommended Equipment: Snowshoes
Water Crossing Notes
Water Crossing Notes: Minor drainages, quite of few of which are still partially open, are no problems for humans although one may want to go up or down a short ways in a few cases to keep the snowshoes completely dry. Pepper and Shiya were able to jump all of them.
Trail Maintenance Notes
Trail Maintenance Notes: There are a few walk around blowdowns and a few easy duckunders.
Dog-Related Notes
Dog-Related Notes: Pepper and Shiya had a little bit of icing but it wasn't bad. Shiya has a fur coat that can handle deep cold; Pepper is pretty winter tough but likes his soft shell. Both did well despite the deep powdery snow and cold, but they are used to it. We saw one other dog that seemed just fine. The large number of still open and/or slush minor drainages means dog paws can get wet. The road is salted too. Pepper's paws were treated with petroleum jelly.

Comments
Comments: Georg and Cory deserve special kudos for breaking trail up the steeps. It was hard work as there was lots of slip sliding in the powdery snow. Even after our double tromping, and that of another half dozen plus, the trail will not be well packed, but a nice trough will be in place. There was one barebooter, everyone else was in snowshoes, and hopefully the last ones out will be one of them to keep the trail smooth and flat with possible rain/sleet coming. The hike down in snowshoes was an absolute delight, mixing glissades, fast steps and just generally easy and soft landings. Fantastic. Sure it was cold out, but we only felt real wind in a few places, the views were crisp and clean, the companions superb, and the snowshoe out the best. Great day with Silverfox, Georg, Cory & Shirya and of course Pepper! Nice to stop and chat with Jeremy & Bryan on the drive home.
