Date of Hike: Thursday, December 26, 2013
Parking/Access Road Notes
Parking/Access Road Notes: Lot #1 near trail head had only a few cars about 7:30AM but was packed a little after 12PM when I got back. Light snow cover made it a little slick in spots, particularly the incline.
Surface Conditions
Surface Conditions: Ice - Black, Snow - Trace/Minimal Depth, Ice - Blue, Ice - Breakable Crust, Standing/Running Water on Trail, Snow/Ice - Frozen Granular, Snow/Ice - Postholes, Slush
Recommended Equipment
Recommended Equipment: Light Traction, Traction
Water Crossing Notes
Water Crossing Notes: Small brook leaving parking lot was low enough to hop rocks or just walk right through it in spots. The two actual river crossings were fairly thoroughly bridged but ice didn't seem super hard and there were a few holes so I stayed on rocks.
Trail Maintenance Notes
Trail Maintenance Notes: Good shape. No blowdowns. Can still see trail blazes and signs easily.
Dog-Related Notes
Dog-Related Notes: Didn't see any dogs out this morning but the trails would have been fine.
Bugs
Bugs:
Lost and Found
Lost and Found: Nothing.

Comments
Comments: Light snow fell all day, picking up a bit toward noon. Wore spikes to the summit. Even though the ground was grippable it had about 1" of fresh powder so it reduced the effectiveness of the spikes. There were even a few bare spots with standing water and some slush at the lower elevations. The spikes slipping was particularly noticeable in the short switchbacks leaving the second river crossing, the point where the trail angles left and heads up the steps toward Sosman junction and on the rocky section leading to the summit. The ice was much harder up top than it was at lower elevations. On the way down enough snow had fallen to hide my footprints and these same areas were very slick so I switched to crampons. If you carry the new mini-crampon style hybrids like the Hillshound Pros they probably would have been perfect. I left the crampons on to the car but spikes would have been fine for most of the stretches except the areas mentioned above. Was 13 deg F with 15-20mph winds on summit that were largely blocked by the trees. No views today.
