Comments
Comments: The ART is basically one big ice sheet (no surprise there!). Crampons (IMHO), are essential. And even then, creative footwork, sound judgement, and good luck are required. My friend Brian and I could not/would not have attempted this trail solo, given the conditions. BUT, we were amply rewarded with absolutely gorgeous weather….super visibility, light winds, and abundant sunshine. We were even overheating at times! Once past the worst of the ice flows (about .2 mile below the hut), micro spikes were sufficient. The Jewell trail was tedious, but at least there were no big ice sheets!
Two young (compared to us!) men breezed by us about 2/3 of the way up the ART. Many thanks for making toeholds in the sheets of ice with your crampons. You made it look so easy!
