Peaks
Peaks Mt. Starr King, Mt. Waumbek, NH
Trails
Trails: Starr King Trail
Date of Hike
Date of Hike: Tuesday, December 24, 2013
Parking/Access Road Notes
Parking/Access Road Notes: Just a bit of snow and ice up to and in the summer lot. It's a bit slow going in a car due to the dips and ridges, but no problem.
Surface Conditions
Surface Conditions: Snow - Trace/Minimal Depth, Ice - Blue
Recommended Equipment
Recommended Equipment: Light Traction
Water Crossing Notes
Water Crossing Notes: None
Trail Maintenance Notes
Trail Maintenance Notes: No problems. There are several stretches of big ice flows, but Hillsounds and my newer microspikes bit into it well. After tonight's forecasted cold temps I'd recommend Hillsounds or better for the ice flows, but much of the trail is barebootable.
Dog-Related Notes
Dog-Related Notes: Great conditions for Pemi and Pepper and they had fun. Pemi carried a bunch of dead wood around just for fun, sometimes looking like Max with the Grinch's antler on his head. There is just a bit of open water on the trail, and some of the ice flows were wet, but their paws never had any icing issues even though they were untreated.

Comments
Comments: This was Plan B but it was a perfect hike for the conditions. Much of the trail is in good shape for hiking. There were some ice flows but these are in the usual places; there's none of the steep ice flows we might have expected on many of the other trails after the rain on snow days. There was very little wind, and coming down in the hardwoods the sun made it feel warm. The Presidentials started to peek above the clouds when we were at the lookout past Waumbek, and on the drive home they were mostly clear and beautiful. It is amazing how little snow one sees above the notch. Thanks to Bobcat & Sunshine (Mike & Lori) for inviting us on their traditional Christmas Eve hike. We had the trail to ourselves and Pemi & Pepper loved it. Great day!
