Dog-Related Notes
Dog-Related Notes: We saw one happy, beautiful, and well-behaved dog. That canine was having the time of her life. Our dog would have been miserable (he hates hiking in snow and slush). The trail conditions today were fine for a dog who enjoys winter hiking. Tomorrow, perhaps not...see below.

Comments
Comments: Snowshoes were useless today, and they'll continue to be useless until a decent amount of snow (over five inches) covers the trail. The recent rain washed away most everything. What's left is a hodgepodge of slush an inch or two deep at most. Except for a few tiny stretches above the final water crossing on the way up, rocks are only partially buried (if that). It was a microspike day today. The only other people we saw tried using snowshoes, but gave up due to lack of snow depth and the multitude of bare rocks and roots.

The upper couple tenths of a mile were "interesting" - a few giant pools of melted, ankle-deep icy-slush here and there...the ledges were a mixture of thin ice and bare, wet rock. We made it up the final giant ledge without difficulty, but after the temperatures drop tonight, that ledge (and all the others) might become impassable without ice tools.

Until there's more snow, you can leave the 'shoes in the car. Bring the crampons and any ice tools you have. I don't think microspikes are going to cut it after the freeze tonight.

I'll post a trip report on my blog tonight or tomorrow morning.

Thanks to my kiddos for being such great company on a rainy, slush-filled day.
