Basically the whole area was in fog from trail head to summits. Trails were fine up to the main ascent on Fishin' Jimmy where it was one of the following: running water over ice, deep puddles of slush and innocent look pack that gives way in sloppy slabs and gushed water. Give this trail a rest till after Tuesday 25th is my advice.
I bare-booted to N. Kinsman for the experience of it, but it was slow and my calves felt it. The flow ice is no real problem. I put on snow shoes from N. Kinsman and stayed with them the remainder of the hike. Unbroken trail to South Kinsman with drifts on exposed areas. Summit scoured to bare rock.
Met 2 folks at LaFayette Place who were doing Cannon. We left the same time, but their car was still there on my return. Met 2 others who were staying at the hut (the only 2 guests). They were starting late (~2pm) and were planning on doing both summits, which seemed ambitious as they had no snow shoes. Rain started around 1 pm and was pretty steady by the time I left. No icing, which was good. |
