Trails
Trails: Webster-Jackson Trail
Date of Hike
Date of Hike: Saturday, December 21, 2013
Parking/Access Road Notes
Parking/Access Road Notes: No problems.
Surface Conditions
Surface Conditions: Ice - Blue, Snow - Packed Powder/Loose Granular, Standing/Running Water on Trail, Slush
Recommended Equipment
Recommended Equipment: Snowshoes
Water Crossing Notes
Water Crossing Notes: Several a bit tricky as water ran over slushy ice making for wet boots/snowshoes crossings for me and cold uncertain wading for Pepper. The crossing that is usually the hardest in spring was, however, solidly bridged.
Trail Maintenance Notes
Trail Maintenance Notes: I pulled one somewhat new stag blowdown off to the side of the trail so it wouldn't freeze in place. There was one other blowdown that was big enough I didn't have time to go after it with my saw.
Dog-Related Notes
Dog-Related Notes: Pretty easy day for Pepper, but the stream/drainage crossings and patches of trail with water standing over slushy uncertain ice weren't his favorites. As he always does he loves to go out to Bugle Ledge and look over the notch. He started out in a sweater but when it got wet I took it off, but the temps were so mild he didn't mind getting pretty wet all over.

Comments
Comments: We drove up in low clouds hoping we could get Waumbek in between the Solstice and the rain, but above the notch the skies lifted much higher and brighter, and the temps jumped 9F, and on getting to Twin Mtn I drove to check out the Presi peaks. Jackson was clear so I continued on. I expected to see others waiting for the Solstice on this short trail, but we were it although later we ran into Dan (the only other snowshoer this day) who was doing the same. The lowest half of the trail was mostly well packed snow, and my MSR snowshoes were pretty good on it. The upper half had pockets of slush ice under water so the MSRs weren't enough but better than not. The ledges had soft ice in places and the MSRs bit into that, but they were just bare wet in others. Spikes would have been mostly useless on the trails today. Some wind on top, and some light rain at the parking area on our return, but we had open views on the summit and temps in the mid 40s. My guess is the trail will be a mess tomorrow in the drainage crossings and upper slush sections but the lower sections may hold up. It wasn't a beauty but any time we can get out on the trails together is a gift.
