Cold day on the summit, 0 degrees but with low winds. Glencliff trail has seen some foot traffic, mostly barebooters but Per and I used snowshoes start to finish. Glencliff trail was largely loosely packed powder, getting looser the last mile up the steeps. Rocks just under the surface but overall great for the ascent. Carriage trail was essentially a series of snow dunes for the first 1/4 mile then mix of packed powder, ice and rocks between multiple drifts until out of the trees. In the open, the usual ice, crusty snow and rock. Descent on Glencliff required care not because of ice, but because of the hidden rocks just waiting to trip you up after being lulled into complacency by stretches of nice snowy trail. Overall the trail is not bad and with our travels over it today, much better than this morning. I suspect tonight's snow and winds will pretty much make that a moot point.. |
