Dog-Related Notes
Dog-Related Notes: Hannah used four paw drive all day and did very well - there was enough snow covering the ice to provide good traction for her. She only needed a small boost on one of the steep pitches approaching North Kinsman, but otherwise was very impressive with the conditions. There were a few open streams down low but probably won't stay that way much longer. If your dog isn't comfortable with ice, I'd recommend waiting at least a few weeks to hike this until the snow builds up.

Comments
Comments: Bare trail down low, dusting of snow and patchy ice started on the old road about a half mile up, snow depth increased to 4-5" in places on the ridge with the occasional 8-10" drift. There was thick ice under the snow especially past Bald Knob spur, but the flow ice was more tolerable with the sticky snow that didn't slide much and improved the traction. We put micros on about a mile from the trailhead and they worked well until the junction with KRT, where we switched to Hillsounds and mini-crampons for the ridge - definitely felt more comfortable in those with the steeper parts of the trail. Switched back to micros about a mile down from the ridge on Mt. Kinsman trail and left them on until we reached bare ground. No views but not quite as cold or windy as forecasted. Only saw one person shortly before we got back to the trailhead, otherwise didn't see a soul all day - thanks to Tim and Hannah for a great day in the woods and a peaceful early winter hike.
