Beautiful day for a winter hike. Bethlehem was completely in the clouds all day, but the MWO webcam showed blue skies over Washington. Reached the Edmands Path trailhead at 1 PM. Trail well-packed crust for first mile or so. Upper portions contained many blue/clear ice flows that were easily navigated around. Traction was a must, today - lots of slippery spots but nothing overly difficult. Worst spot was at open drainage crossing below the cliffs - some scrambling on ice flow at that spot, but plenty of trees to hold onto. 2-3 inches of snow tops on the upper portions of the trail... no snowshoes needed. Summit of Ike very windy. Great sunset show from the summit with some awesome alpenglow. Made it down past the icy bits before putting on the headlamp. |
