forecast seemed a little iffy but Jackson was on the radar and off we went. soft and slushy up to the elephant head spur, above there things were much more solid with a couple of inches of snow over long stretches of flow ice that was firming up during the day. we were able to use spikes today as the ice was pretty soft but I would expect it to be harder tomorrow..bring the sharp ones!! passed several on descent..all of whom mentioned the wind including one gentleman who swore it was 70mph. I dont know about that. we geared up below the ledges..valerie kept with her spikes..I put on mini crampons for the cone which made for pretty good climbing on the mix of frozen granular, snow, and blue ice. Very cool views coming to treeline..i am thinking wind was 25-30..maybe a higher gust..temps in the single digits. all and all not that bad and we stayed on the summit for a couple of minutes. the earlier slush we saw was firming up as the day went on though the footing was great in spikes . Happy Thanksgiving everyone..great day to be out |
