For a work-related project, I joined a group that is training to climb Mt. Kilimanjaro in Africa in December. I had limited time today, however, so had to turn back at about the 3,300-foot level. Up to that point the Glencliff Trail was covered by about an inch or two of fresh, dry snow. Microspikes were the right choice; anything more than that would have been overkill, and anything less would have made for pretty slippery walking.
Winds were gusty and strong, even in the trees. The group continued on, determined to make the summit. (But they were led by an experienced climber, Wes Chapman, who would turn the group back if the summit looked too dangerous to reach.)
14 degrees at the trailhead at 9 this morning. |
