Quite an adventure for our group of 7. Tough conditions. Mist and intermittent rain, temps in the 30s and breezy on the ridge. Hancock Notch had quite a bit of trail ice that was slick in the afternoon. Water crossings on Cedar Brook were all ok though slippery. Didn't see any black ice on rocks in the rivers as the temps were above 32. Put spikes on early and kept them on most of the day. We decided to go up South Hancock. Packed snow and a lot of ice that just got slicker as the day went on. The ridge probably had the best conditions with mostly packed snow.
The descent from North was very icy and difficult as the mist and showers picked up. Despite these conditions were saw several groups in shorts, sneakers, and blue jeans. Our group had Sam and Annie two intrepid young hikers who showed a lot of grit and spunk on the hill today never complaining in the gnarly conditions. Tip of the Cap to them!!! |
