Comments
Comments: intro to winter, part 3. Cold and blustery at the trailhead this morning. The sun helped. The old road portion of Bunnell Notch trail had an inch or 2 of snow on a soft base. Was slow going at times. We put on spikes where we headed up into the woods and left them on all the way back. The climb a shoulder season mix of fluffy snow, running water, some mud for sure. Slow and sloppy going on ascent . we were the first on trail since the last snow and the unblemished carpet was fun. There were a few places on climb where there was a bit more snow but basically 3-5 inches on top of mostly soft trail. Spikes were perfect. Windy at the cabin, We were able to hit the route pretty much spot on to the summit in now up to 8 inches of snow with a few drifts. Could have used snowshoes here as the ground was frozen as well making for a good base. Quickly tagged the summit and headed back..pretty cold day with great snow on the trees and fine views made up for occasional sloppy conditions. Fine winter warm up with Valerie
