| Comments: |
Beaver Brook Ski Trail had some patchy mud. Gale River Road walk was dry. About halfway between the Gale River Trail and Garfield Trail trailheads (a few minutes past campsite 8, halfway down a long straightaway), I took a left onto a gated forest road. I followed this up a hill for a few minutes, then took a right at a fork (left deadends at an old logging landing). I then followed this to the end (a field with some small spruce), walked to the lower end of the field, and 50 feet into the woods, onto the old snowmobile trail (left - west). A few minutes later, this trail crossed the Garfield Trail - I continued on the snowmobile trail, over a bridge, then followed the shore of that brook back to the Garfield Trail, thus avoiding all sizable crossings. The roads had some blowdowns, but were otherwise dry. I encounted snow for the first time about a mile above the crossings on the Garfield Trail, and wore snowshoes from that point all the way to the summit - there's still a good 4-6 feet of snow up high and barebooting would result in very deep postholes. Pretty much stable (for snowshoes) monorail from snowline to summit. |
