Trail starts somewhat dry for a short distance, gets wet and muddy around the area of the old spring/well. A fair bit of water flowing down the trail from run off. Not too far past the spring we ran into spotty snow and at about a mile and a half, 2600' elevation we put the snowshoes on. Once out of the hardwoods it was good going withlots more snow all the way to the summit of Starr King. The trail heading to Waumbek had lots of snow and we did a little postholeing to our waist even with snowshoes. There were a couple other groups we ran into with no snowshoes they were postholeing bad wishing they had shoes. With temps in the 70's the first time I ever did an entire snowshoe trip in shorts and tee shirt. Great day. |
