| Comments: |
Bare booted lower elevations where there was alternating wet snow and mud. There was running water under the snow in several places. Used snowshoes from just below Mt Surprise to the summit of Moriah. Trail was pocked with postholes up to three feet deep. Snowshoes pretty much provided enough flotation to avoid sinking in to snow. Area below the summit had many snowshoe tracks leading in different directions. I did not see blazes marking the trail. Perhaps I was off trail or maybe the path is poorly marked. I opted to ascend up the leftmost trails (eastern side)which worked out well to get to the summit. The trail weaved about the thicket of trees in some spots and occasionally there were sharp turns in the trail so it is important to be observant to avoid losing the trail. The Carter Moriah trail sign near the summit was just above the snow line. There were great views of the Presidentials from the ledges and the summit. |
