Hiking Trail Conditions Report
Peaks
Peaks Mt. Moosilauke, Mt. Moosilauke - South Peak, NH
Trails
Trails: Carriage Road, Glencliff Trail, South Peak Spur, Hurricane Trail
Date of Hike
Date of Hike: Saturday, September 21, 2013
Parking/Access Road Notes
Parking/Access Road Notes: The "unmaintained" section of Breezy Point road is fine to drive up to some parking close to the trailhead; but with a little care one can do the last 100 yds or so and park in a nice flat area. We were the only car there all day as far as I know.
Surface Conditions
Surface Conditions: Dry Trail, Mud - Minor/Avoidable
Recommended Equipment
Recommended Equipment:
Water Crossing Notes
Water Crossing Notes: Bridges on the major brooks and step overs on mostly small drainages.
Trail Maintenance Notes
Trail Maintenance Notes: This section of Hurricane appears to be lightly used, but the footpath was pretty easy to follow. There are some old paint blazes too. The waterbars from Glencliff to just past the "peak" are generally filled, but significant erosion is mostly limited to the steep climb up the "peak" on the west side, much less so on the east. The trail is a bit grown in by low vegetation in a few places, and there is debris and/or easily avoided blowdowns elsewhere. But coming down on the east side we suddenly came across a relatively new log bridge, and then stone water bars which were working nicely. It would be nice if the western side could get the same attention One major crawl under blowdown on Glencliff. Carriage Path unchanged from August.
Dog-Related Notes
Dog-Related Notes: Pepper would give this hike 1 paws up. There are only a few decent sip n dips and they are down low. There are some very small drainages up high sufficient for him to drink. There were a lot of people and dogs on the peaks and ridge so he was continually getting off to the side. But we saw noon below Snapper on the Carriage Path, the lower Glencliff or Hurricane so he had his freedom.
Bugs
Bugs: No problem.

Comments
Comments: In August we went up Carriage Path to Gorge Brook and back Hurricane. This was the matching loop on the west. My guess is that people see that Hurricane on this loop has a roughly 1200' climb and they dismiss it. It isn't as easy as the east loop but it still makes for a nice loop. There are some big 'ol trees on a part of the western section. When things are busy on the main trails these loops are a great way to get a guaranteed parking spot especially for late arrivals like us today, and plenty of solitude on the trails away from the ridges & peaks. The latter were very busy. There was a pretty good wind on the main peak. Most of the day was sunny but with clouds to the east sometimes filling the valleys or covering some peaks. Very interesting. We got out a short time before the sprinkles came. Today's couldn't compare to yesterday's great hike, but it was well worth it. Thanks Pepper.
