Beautiful day in the mountains. One can make good time on the Great Gulf Trail up to Spaulding Lake while enjoying the cascades and waterfalls. The climb up the Great Gulf headwall is marked by fading yellow blazes and very small cairns. Generally the trail weaves back and forth across the stream draining the headwall. Above the stream the trail markings bend to the right (on ascent)but are somewhat difficult to follow.
The Nelson Crag Trail was well marked by large cairns. The trails below tree line are obvious.
Great views above tree line could see to Camel's Hump and Mansfield in VT to Pleasant Mtn and Sebago Lake in ME.
Saw John, Erica, and Pepper near the conclusion of the hike. Also met many AT thru hikers. |
