Recommended Equipment
Recommended Equipment:
Water Crossing Notes
Water Crossing Notes: Crossed Pine Brook and the cascades many times, searching for the best route. We were always able to find safe areas to cross.
Trail Maintenance Notes
Trail Maintenance Notes: East Pond Trail is a very nice walk. The bushwhack along Pine Brook is very thick, and the bushwhack from the top of the slide to the Mt Osceola Trail is even thicker. Really tough going. The slide itself is intense. Many areas where it's difficult to find a safe route, due to the steepness, slippery areas, crumbly rocks, and little vegetation.
Dog-Related Notes
Dog-Related Notes: No dogs on this hike. Didn't see a single person until we reached the summit of Mt Osceola. And there were only four people there, even though it was a beautiful day with great views.
Bugs
Bugs: None to speak of.

Comments
Comments: I've wanted to climb the Dogleg Slide for a while, and it was quite an adventure for my sons and me. We chose to bushwhack along the east bank of Pine Brook, but we soon found that it was easier to walk on the rocks in the brook itself than in the thick woods. The slide was TOUGH, with many anxious moments and one fall (thankfully minor). VERY careful foot placement is required in many places. There's some great waterfall scenery, and the views are amazing, both on the climb, when you're in a deep ravine with East Osceola on your left and West Osceola on your right, and from the top of the slide, where a huge panorama opens up - all the way from the Kinsmans in the west to the Presidentials in the east. I would NOT recommend this climb in wet conditions.
