Water Crossing Notes
Water Crossing Notes: We were most worried about the southernmost river crossing of the 7 crossings on the Mt Clinton Trail - water was low enough so wading in sneakers was fine - water was shin-deep and not scary at all. The other numerous crossings on the Mt Clinton were relatively easy once we found the trail on the opposite sides. We followed an early NETC trail report (from about a year ago) for crossing descriptions but most of the tape was not there and the descriptions didn't seem to match the growth of the forest/rock formations. The WMG did not have that much info so we pretty much relied on an altimeter and the map for shape of the crossings. Needless to say, blazes and trail markers were absent even tho this trail is OPEN. At one point (one of the lower 2 crossings), we followed cairns to the river but could not find the trail on the opposite side... had to cut back in along the river a ways to find the opposite trail.
Trail Maintenance Notes
Trail Maintenance Notes: Mt Clinton Trail has drainage issues.... that much we knew... some areas are just marshes/bogs and it is difficult to see your feet. Other places the hobblebush has obscured everything. It was a challenge descending on this trail - looked worse going back uphill every time we checked. We spent more than an hour searching for the southern trail sign for the Mt Clinton Trail before we realized that that entire junction is just plain gone... washed into the Dry River.... there is just NOTHING there.... When we crossed the Dry River looking for the connection to the Dry River Trail, we found a tentsite sign and, going both upstream and down, realized the trail looked familiar - it was the Dry River Trail.... no connection to the Mt Clinton Trail on that (east) side of the river.

Comments
Comments: VERY fun day with Michelle!!!! Perfect weather and temperature - great adventure - we were both happy to get the Mt Clinton Trail!!!! You have to really WANT to get that trail to be in there!

NOTE: We used the CLOSED Dry River Trail as part of our loop. In the places where the Dry River has washed into the river, there is pink flagging with official-looking numbers on it directing to the next available piece of trail. The old trail is still very cool - saw some familiar rocks!
