Hiking Trail Conditions Report
Peaks
Peaks The Horn, The Bulge, Mt. Cabot, NH
Trails
Trails: Unknown Pond Trail, Kilkenny Ridge Trail, Horn Spur
Date of Hike
Date of Hike: Sunday, June 23, 2013
Parking/Access Road Notes
Parking/Access Road Notes: Mill Brook Road has hiker sign off Rte 110 so easy to spot. Access road very long. Trail head is immediately before 2nd bridge. The sign for trail was hard to spot because an evergreen branch was hanging over it. Actually missed on way up road. The "parking area" is nothing more than a widening of road after bridge that fits 2-3 cars. Otherwise you are parking along road. No facilities.
Surface Conditions
Surface Conditions: Dry Trail, Wet Trail, Wet/Slippery Rock, Mud - Minor/Avoidable, Mud - Significant
Recommended Equipment

Water Crossing Notes
Water Crossing Notes: Few very small brooks all easily crossed
Trail Maintenance Notes
Trail Maintenance Notes: Unknown Pond Trail has several overgrown areas that require extra care (not so much to avoid loosing trail but more to avoid slick roots and rocks underneath leaves). Did not see any blazes on trail. Kilkenny Ridge Trail had numerous blowdowns, most of which were the awkward "step under" version (2 had bushwhacks). Fair amount of blazes on this trail but all very old and worn out. Log rails in muddy areas of this trail were badly rotted and many rails have collapsed. Signs on both trails were old and moss covered but still readable.
Dog-Related Notes
Dog-Related Notes: Trail fine for dogs. Saw two groups with a dog. Only exception I would have is The Horn, which has some steep scrambles on rock with deep cracks and potentially high falls at the very top.
Bugs
Bugs: Mosquitos out in force as soon as you stepped out of your car. Not a real issue while walking but they were all over you when you stopped, particularly lower parts of trails. The Horn was absolutely swarming with gnats and some sort of bee looking bugs that must have just hatched. They were everywhere, even in the breeze.
Lost and Found
Lost and Found: n/a

Comments
Comments: Trail really wet and slick AM, especially with all the roots and moss covered rocks. Lot of mud on lower 1/3 of Unknown Pond Trail. Cloudy and foggy most of day with a few bright spots ahead of thunderstorms (which thankfully did not start until about 5 minutes after I left). Did Horn on way down and it was wet until the last few ledges at top, which lucky for me were dry - tricky scrambles. Trail was drying out on upper sections on way down but that probably did not stay that way. Rain was VERY heavy in storms after.
