Comments
Comments: Barebooted about 1.5 miles in early morning, then put on snowshoes for the day. Trail to Mt. Surprise was well blazed. Beyond, trail is obscure in many areas - open ledges etc. I think I was mostly on the trail to about 3600 feet, with a couple of exploratory dead-ends. Above that point, I meandered a bit -- some variants ascending and descending. Past experience on trail, occasional faint trench, and luck were helpful. Sign at summit spur was below snow level. Much of the recent snow has fallen off the trees already. Faint tracks made on hard snow in AM may disappear in warm temps and sun in PM.
There was evidence that someone had followed my tracks to about 2700 feet in stabilicers, which lacked the floatation of snowshoes in soft spring-like snow.
Note: First 100 yards of trail has some hard icy spots - light traction can be useful here.
