Date of Hike: Wednesday, June 5, 2013
Parking/Access Road Notes
Parking/Access Road Notes: Parking for a dozen or so vehicles at the Edmands Path Trail trailhead off of Mt. Clinton Road. Mt. Clinton Road has been cleaned of the debris from the Memorial Day weekend snowstorm.
Surface Conditions
Surface Conditions: Dry Trail, Mud - Minor/Avoidable
Recommended Equipment
Recommended Equipment:
Water Crossing Notes
Water Crossing Notes: Water crossings were not an issue.
Trail Maintenance Notes
Trail Maintenance Notes: Edmands Path is, overall, in decent shape, but needs some brushing (hobblebush) down low and some water bar cleaning in the mid-section, where the trail alternates between rock ledges and dirt/mineral soil. There are still the five or six medium-to-large-sized step-under/-over/-around blowdowns reported over the past couple of weeks. (Two of these are causing herd paths to be formed around them.) The downed beech saplings -- aka "snowdowns" -- from the Memorial Day weekend snowstorm have been removed.
Dog-Related Notes
Dog-Related Notes: Plenty of water in various creek crossings down low on Edmands Path; after that, nothing until the small spring that flows across the trail a bit below treeline.
Bugs
Bugs: Bugs were not an issue -- saw only a few down below, and brisk winds up high kept them away above treeline.

Comments
Comments: Went to Mt. Franklin and Mt. Monroe and the areas around them to check on the alpine flower conditions. There is plenty of Diapensia and Lapland Rosebay blooming -- with more to come -- but the Alpine Azalea is still a few days away. So, figure about 5-7 days' time from now and the color show should be in good form for these peaks.

Other trail notes:

1. Edmands Path is mostly dry -- some minor muddy/seepage areas, but a vast difference from last week;

2. Edmands Path historic stone gate (about a half mile from the Crawford Path) has had some of the stones knocked down on the left-hand side;

3. Crawford Path and the loops over Mt. Franklin and Mt. Monroe have an occasional minor muddy section, but the trails mostly dry; and

4. Southern end of Mt. Monroe Loop is missing sign at intersection with Crawford Path (sign at the northern end is intact).

Everything above treeline (mosses, small shrubs) is greening up pretty steadily now.
