Comments
Comments: Overnight snow at the lodge and Gorge Brook trail to the bridge, had accumulated 2-3" was melting, highs in the mid 30s. Light snow falling. Snow amounts increased to about 6" of very moist, snowman-making snow. To about 3000 feet the trail was snow covered, wet and ponding, though not particularly muddy. Layered up at 3,000 feet. From about 3,000 to 4000, we broke the trail, sometimes post-holing it into drifts about 3 feet deep. At 4,000 feet we went into full winter gear. Evidence of early (pre-snow) freezing rain, which accumulated up to an inch on one observed rock. Above the treeline the winds picked up dramatically, estimated at 70mph, based on past experience. Many pauses to reset our footing. Carins were needed for navigation, trail was rarely identifiable above treeline. Snow was windslab above treeline. Hail. Heavy snow. Some drifts as high as 4 feet. Summit socked in the clouds, visibility about 200'.
