Dry Trail, Wet Trail, Mud - Minor/Avoidable, Snow/Ice - Monorail (Stable) |

| Recommended Equipment: |
Light Traction |
|
| Water Crossing Notes: |
The crossing of Carrigain Brook is very manageable - rock-hopping plus using a few small trees placed as a bridge. |
|
| Trail Maintenance Notes: |
There are at least 2 dozen blowdowns scattered along Carrigain Notch and Desolation trails. Half a dozen on the Desolation trail are a nuisance - the rest are fairly easy to deal with. |
|
| Dog-Related Notes: |
The steeper sections of the Desolation trail has a great deal of ice coverage which can be tricky. Cinnilla was not really happy with this part but handled it well. Occasionally, she would find her own trail through the woods to avoid the ice.
Plenty of streams suitable for dipping as well as refreshment. |

| Comments: |
Snow/ice coverage on the Desolation trail starts at about 3,500 ft and is pretty much solid from about 3,800 ft. The last 1/2 mile still has some 1.5 ft. of snow-depth. The monorail is fairly stable but I would not recommend attempting this trail without some kind of traction.
There is much less snow/ice on the Signal Ridge trail and I did not feel the need to use the micropspikes during the descent - but I would still recommend bringing them and then make your own decision. |
