Just about everything today. After a day with the ROcket yesterday I thought Cabot would be a bit easier. Wrong. Trail was fine to Bunnell Notch though some blazing would not be a bad idea. Monorail and wet unstable snow started just before the junction of the Mt. Cabot Trail. We put spikes on above the view ledge. Monorail was mostly ok but plenty of postholing and slipping. At the hut the monorail all but disappeared but large and deep drifts of snow remain and the postholing got even better as the trails wandered around the ridge. Had thought about a loop over the Horn but glad not too have done that with the unstable snow conditions. ALot of melting and it temps stay above freezing it wont last long. Nice not to carry snowshoes though they probably would have been the best option today from hut to summit. |
