The trail condition is better than I have ever seen -- MUCH easier hiking than in summer. Heading up to treeline the trail is a cement sidewalk, well compacted with no icy sections at all. Light traction (MicroSpikes or similar) is optimum. A few of us opted for real crampons, but it is not really needed. Snowshoes would have been of no use. Above treeline conditions are even better. All those nasty boulders and crevices are buried and covered by a firm smooth surface, with just enough crusty snow for reliable traction. Snow depth is probably 3 feet or more; but it is hard to tell because we were always on top of it all. |
