Comments
Comments: A little bit of everything condition wise today. I was equipped with microspikes and mountaineering snowshoes. We bare booted up maybe 1/4 to 1/3rd of the way along the Kinsman Ridge Trail starting from the Tram parking. Microspikes are definitely required. We started around 9:15 and reached the summit around 11 AM. There are sections of ice which were easily navigable in mircospikes on the ascent. The descent required a lot more caution. I used my snowshoes on the way down, not for the flotation but for the more aggressive traction. My preference would have been for my BD Sabretooths instead. Toward the top where it gets rocky and the trail meanders in and out of shaded/exposed areas you get corresponding areas of snow/ice free areas and snow/ice covered areas. We were actually able to bareboot the top section although caution must be exercised. Saw some moose tracks near the observation tower.

With pack and gear on I weigh in at about 200 lbs and didn't post hole. We started at 9 AM. Had we started later I'm reasonably sure that at my trail weight, I would have needed the shoes to avoid post holing as the afternoon sun was quickly softening up the trail. I'd say there's still about 2 to 2.5 feet of snow on the trail in certain sections (definitely saw a few post holes that were at least 2 feet deep)..
