Recommended Equipment
Recommended Equipment: Snowshoes, Light Traction
Water Crossing Notes
Water Crossing Notes: Open water everywhere - even a bit on sections of the Kilkenny Ridge. Most are easily dealt with. On requires stepping on submerged rocks - or going 50' upstream an use a blowdown for the crossing.
Trail Maintenance Notes
Trail Maintenance Notes: 3 blowdowns on the Kilkenny ridge. 2 are easy "duck-unders" and one is a bit more messy "step-over".
Dog-Related Notes
Dog-Related Notes: Postholes might be a risk but generally conditions are good for dogs. 4 on the trails today (but Cinnilla stayed home yet again. She has a strained muscle and won't be hiking with me until maybe mid-May.)

Comments
Comments: Very variable conditions.

York Pond and Bunnell Notch have intermittent snowcover - mixed with water and mud. The snow sections are badly chopped and postholed. Kilkenny Ridge has better and smoother coverage but several sections are postholded including the section from the Cabin to the summit.

With the trail still being firm I barebooted to the summit. It was easy enough to pick good footing between the holes. On the way back I used micropspikes for a while but with a softening trail I switched to snowshoes. Neither were really satisfactory and I went back to barebooting. Pick you poison.

Fresh moose-dung in a couple of places.
