Even though I started at 11, the beginning of the trail was very consolidated. When I got up to the waterfalls I used Microspikes. As the snow got mushy, I switched to snowshoes. I used them until after the summit of Haystack. More open rock then drifts for the trip to Mt. Lincoln. After I returned to tree line, I decided that the clumping snow was easier to traverse in microspikes then snowshoes. Sun turned much of the trail to slush and it became very slick. Many, many people barebooted or wore crampons. Trail was getting chewed up but still plenty of snow on the trail. I couldn't believe how many small crossings opened up during the day. |
