Used snowshoes car-to-car. Microspikes would have sufficed up until the Gem Pool, but snowshoes were definitely useful in areas after that and even in a couple snow drift areas on the Monroe Loop trail. Lots of ice has developed around the hut, so if you're continuing on to Washington, crampons will be helpful. The forecast called for rain and strong winds on Sunday. The winds were never too bad above treeline, even on Monroe, and aside from a passing cloud that pelted us with hail for a minute or two while we were at the summit of Monroe, there was no other precipitation to speak of. Another gorgeous day in the Whites. |
