Comments
Comments: Down low there were a few sloped icy sections. I used microspikes up to Mt Surprise and then switched to snowshoes for the remainder of the hike. The surface was rock hard which gave plenty of bite for traction in the steep ledge areas. There was one false snowshoe track just uphill from Mt Surprise which had a log placed across it to discourage its use. Trail easier to hike today than when the ledges are wet or icy. The views opened up for Mt Washington and the Northern Presidentials as the day progressed. The mountain mass pretty much blocked the southwesterly winds except for the bare summit ledge. There was a rough path through the snow heading south from Mt Moriah. The sign on the Carter-Moriah Trail near the summit must have been buried under the snow.
